Domestic Violence Groups

This is a targeted trauma group for individuals who have experienced or are currently experiencing domestic violence. This group aims to understand: what domestic violence is, the impact of trauma, and what defines trauma. In addition, members will learn skills to cope with domestic violence, and learn what healthy relationships look like.

What is domestic violence?

Domestic violence is aggressive or violent behavior that takes place in the relationship and is typically inflicted by a partner or spouse. Domestic violence can take many forms, including:
1. Physical abuse.
2. Verbal abuse (e.g. yelling, demeaning, insulting, berating), financial abuse (e.g. withholding money for “favors” or as “punishment”).
3. Intimidation (using gestures, looks, threats to make you feel like you can’t leave, destroying property, abusing pets).
4. Coercion or Threats (threatening to harm you or themselves, threatening to report the victim for illegal activity - real or imagined).
5. Using children (e.g. withholding time spent with children, using children to relay messages, harassing you while at visitations for the children).
6. Isolation (e.g. making efforts to keep you from connecting with friends or family, preventing employment, preventing involvement in community activities where you will be with other people).
7. Using Community Standing against you (e.g. person with a position of authority threatens you legally).
8. Minimizing, Blaming, Denying (e.g. gaslighting - stating the abuse didn’t happen, making you question yourself, making you believe you are responsible for their behavior).

Payment Information

All of the trauma groups offered by NC Cutting Edge Counseling, PLLC (NCCEC) are closed groups, meaning that each group will have the same participants for the total duration of the group. This is necessary for trauma groups, as it creates a sense of safety and security among group members. For this reason, we will have participants in the groups sign an agreement to commit to the group for the amount of sessions in the group.
For instance, if the group runs 8 weeks long, we will ask participants to sign an agreement for all 8 groups in that series. Since there are limited spots available, we ask participants for a payment plan of their choosing for all 8 weeks of the group (whether they show up or miss a session).
